why i fucking love sonic mania

HI SO AUGUST 15TH A GAME CAME OUT AND IT'S CALLED SONIC MANIA AND IT'S AMAZING

GO PLAY IT LIKE NOW IF YOU HAVEN'T

or wait for the pc release :(

but i however was lucky enough to not be someone who bought it on pc, and i preordered it on ps4 as soon as possible. now, why was i so hasty in my preorder? why would i put my faith into a game from a series that hasn't exactly been stellar in its recent years? well, that would be because of who was behind mania. christian "the taxman" whitehead, headcannon and pagoda west games, all people with passion for the classic sonic games and people who know how to make a sonic game work. taxman worked on the sonic mobile remasters, headcannon on sonic megamix, and pagoda west games on sonic 2 hd. needless to say, when i first watched the trailer, the moment i saw christian whitehead's logo i lit up. i knew this would be almost as good as sonic 3 & knuckles.

and if i'm honest? i think i like it better. seriously. the amount of love and care that was put into this game is just astonishing, representing all of the best of sonic's classic career, including some of the overlooked stuff, which makes me very very happy. this game is incredibly consistent. i liked every single zone, even one that was actually based on one of my least favourite zones, which i won't spoil, but you'll likely know what i'm talking about when you see it. that's because these remixes of the old zones aren't just tired rehashes, they take what was great about the zone and amalgamate it with fresh ideas and ideas from other zones not featured, going against your expectations. needless to say, there'll be plenty of moments of you going "holy shit" when the game does something because it's so fucking cool. my first playthrough of the game was just nonstop moments like that. i loved it.

the levels were so fucking expansive, so even through multiple playthroughs i wasn't going through the same shit every time, i was finding new special rings, extra lives, elemental shields, and i was fucking having fun. the level design is fresh and has unique gimmicks but they aren't obtrusive gimmicks that are no fun to play and plague the game. each and every stage has its own gimmick but these don't drag on, and are incredibly easy to grasp. it's fun. this is something i think games need to learn from. add gimmicks, but keep them fresh, incorporate them into the standard gameplay, make sure they're unobtrusive and make sure they do not overstay their welcome. mania accomplishes this beautifully.

and knuckles doesn't get the short end either! he gets some exclusive stuff that makes a playthrough as him worth playing. there's one zone in particular i won't spoil but it was one of the coolest levels as knuckles. i enjoyed my first knuckles playthrough just as i did my sonic playthrough. i even got all the emeralds that time. speaking of which, the special stages... well, i think if you liked sonic cd's special stages, you'll like these. for the most part i liked them, but i fucking hated the sixth special stage. that was it really. for those of you who don't like them, i suppose there's the returning blue spheres, as a replacement for sonic 3's bonus stages. i won't spoil what these unlock, but it isn't continues, i'll tell you that much. it is very much worth doing them all, but goddamn a few of them will fucking bust your balls. some of them are quite hard, especially if you're going for gold.

and the soundtrack, good god the soundtrack, i fucking adore it. up there with sonic cd jp for me. tee lopes has got this shit right in the fucking bag, i think i'd listen to some of this stuff casually. it's that fucking good. it's all very fitting with the stages, there's a lot of variety, good remixes of classic themes, and excellent new tracks. which reminds me, the new stages in mania are all EXCELLENT. they all make me wish for a new 2d game that was made up of entirely new zones, because they're all so fun to play, and they feel like real sonic levels. one in particular is my favourite zone in the game, something i wasn't expecting to happen. but that doesn't mean the classic stages aren't great, on the contrary, i love them all.

is my nostalgia for sonic cd and 3 and knuckles blinding me? maybe just a bit idk. do i think this is a great game regardless? yes. even if you aren't a proper sonic fan, i feel like if you like platformers you will like this game a lot, or at least be able to appreciate the true passion that was poured into this. i mean, fuck, look at the intro alone. that shit is great. more games should start with intros like that. beautiful stuff.

is this my favourite sonic game?

yes.

probably goty.

fucking play it if you haven't. or play it when the pc release comes out. if you're a classic sonic fan, you have no excuse not to pick this up.

i adore it.

i played it again as sonic and tails with a friend of mine, yesterday
i think he put it best, since we were talking about it of course

"i don't get why people are complaining about how there's not enough new zones. everything reused? those ARE new zones, they added so much fresh content to these that they barely even feel like the same ones."

    yeah it was pretty good

i wasn't the hugest fan of the dropdash mechanic though, felt like they just added it to fill in the void that is sonic's lack of flight abilities
